Pearl River celebrates
Asian pacific American Heritage Month

Free music performances at Pearl River store

    New York, NY -April 7, 2005--Pearl River, New York's premier shopping destination for authentic Asian products, will celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May with its first ever music series, featuring weekly in-store performances by top Asian American musicians. With musical styles ranging from the traditional to R&B and folk, the featured artists (Kevin So, Alfa Garcia, Eric Jiaju Lee and Vudoo Soul) have played at notable venues throughout New York and the United States. Musicians will perform two 25-minute sets at 2:00PM and 3:00PM each Saturday. All performances are free and will take place inside Pearl River, located at 477 Broadway (between Grand and Broome Streets). For more information on these performances,

    The performance schedule is as follows:

    Kevin So (May 7 at 2:00PM & 3:00PM) Carving his songs from sweet R&B, hot rock, hip-hop, and folk-pop, he presents his life and times in brash strokes of insight, wit, and empathy, all underscored by a deeply felt pride in being both Asian and American. He has been nominated 8 times for the Boston Music Awards and has opened for some of the industry's best known acts including Joe Cocker, Randy Newman, Boz Scaggs, and Billy Bragg.     Alfa Garcia (May 14 at 2:00PM & 3:00PM) A rising star in the New York music scene, Alfa's songs are influenced by an array of styles including classical, oldies, indie, alternative as well as authors Jane Austen and Jack Kerouac. She has performed her music in New York, New Jersey and the Philippines. She is currently a sophomore at NYU and studying music. For more info, visit www.alfa-music.com

    Eric Jiaju Lee and Beyond Boundaries (May 21 at 2:00PM & 3:00PM) Eric Jiaju Lee is a producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist specializing in stringed instruments such as the violin, guitar, and traditional Chinese erhu. His new musical project, Beyond Boundaries, combines live instrumentation with self-produced, pre-recorded material and freely draws from a diverse range of Eastern and Western musical traditions.     Vudoo Soul (May 28 at 2:00PM & 3:00PM) In 2002, Vietnamese American R&B singer/songwriter Vudoo Soul was a sophomore at MIT majoring in electrical engineering and computer science when he auditioned for American Idol. After advancing to the Top 200 in Hollywood, Vudoo Soul realized that it was a sign to keep following the love of music.     May is Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month--a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. In June 1977, Representatives Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific Heritage Week On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush designated May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
