Mala originates from Sichuan, China and translates to "numbing" and "spicy." A staple in founder Justin Eli's Singaporean household, authentic Sichuan mala flavor was something he couldn't find in grocery stores. So he decided to replicate it himself.
Unlike other Asian brands that pair chili peppers with peanuts or garlic, the Mom's Mala Sichuan chili oil is all about bringing out the aromatic side of chili. Rounded out with a blend of star anise, cinnamon and cloves — the core spices of Chinese five-spice — this mala is spicy without being incendiary while also having floral and lightly smoky notes.
