We're 55! Our birthday present to you

Dear Friends of Pearl River Mart,

This September, we turned 55. Can you believe it? We’re still kicking as a brick-and-mortar shop in the heart of New York City. And knock on wood, our founders, Mr. and Mrs. Chen, are still going strong. You’ll find them at our SoHo store at least four days a week. They call this “semi-retirement.”

What started in 1971 as a tiny Chinatown shop has become a place where generations of New Yorkers have found a rice bowl, a paper lantern, a slipper, or a taste of home. This fall also marks my own 10 years with the family business. I’m the Chens’ daughter-in-law, and I’m a former attorney and nonprofit executive who never expected to be ordering lucky cats by the thousands.

It hasn’t always been easy, with sky-high rents, inflation, and tariffs nobody can predict. But every time a customer stops me in the aisle to tell me about a bowl they still treasure, or a special someone they used to shop here with, I’m reminded why we keep going. Neighborhood stores still matter, and you’re the reason we’re here.
