Lunar New Year 2026 in Review: Red Envelope Art, CBS in the House, and Lots of Mahjong

As always we're a bit sad when Lunar New Year season comes to a close. Luckily we have lots of fun memories to look back on.

The Red Envelope Show: Year of the Horse

We kicked off the season with the opening of the 11th annual Red Envelope Show, complete with a lion dance blessing from Columbia University Lion Dance. Created and curated by Albert Chau, this fun and festive exhibition features over 200 red envelopes with original artwork by illustrations and contemporary artists from all over the world and their renditions of the Year of the Horse.

The Red Envelope Show: Year of the Horse is on view through March 29 in our Soho gallery. You can also view and purchase the pieces online.

Lunar New Year Traditions with CBS

John Elliott, veteran meteorologist of CBS New York came to our Soho store for a Lunar New Year-edition of his Sunday morning show, during which he spoke with Pearl River Mart President Joanne Kwong, Cookbook author and James Beard finalist Christine Wong  (The Vibrant Hong Kong Table), Red Envelope Show creator and curator Albert Chau, Kimbap Lab partner and general manager Dan Ahn, members of Columbia University Lion Dance, and Light Up Chinatown founders Joanne Kwong and Chung Seto.

Lunar New Year Day at Soho

We rang in the first official day of the Year of the Horse with a fabulous performance by the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute Dragon and Lion Dance Team and delicious tastings from Sage Matcha and Mama Lam's.

Pearl River Mart x Ray's Lunar New Year Happy Hour

A million thanks Ray's Bar co-owners Justin Theroux (and Pearl River Mart friend) and Carlos Quirarte, Figment founder Min Liu, everyone at Ray's Bar, and all our friends who joined us for drinks, mahjong, dumplings, and zodiac readings courtesy of Martell, Mahjong Palace, Nom Wah, and Julie Huang.

Lunar New Year Extravaganza at Chelsea Market

Our ninth annual Lunar New Year Extravaganza at Chelsea Market was day of full of fun, beginning with ribbon dancing from the New York Chinese Cultural Center and lion dancing from the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute Dragon and Lion Dance Team.

The festivities continued with treats from Pearl River Mart Foods vendors Kimbap Lab, Mao's Bao, Tea and Milk, and Maxi's Noodle; Chelsea Market neighbor Dickson's; vendor-partners Achilles Heat and Djablo Sauce; and event guest the Egg Suite.

There were also cultural activities with Sylvia Chen (author of Sparkles for Sunny and Tricky Chopsticks), Chinese metaphysics practitioner Julie Huang (creator of the Glow Up Golden calendar), Chinese calligraphy with Children's Chinese Book Garden, and of course mahjong.

Thanks to all who came out to celebrate with us! Already looking forward to the Year of the Goat!
