Gift Guides 2025: Nerdy in the Best Way
We at Pearl River Mart are all nerds at heart. So of course we love all things arts and crafts, games, and books.
Arts and crafts aficionados
For Chinese calligraphy connoisseurs consider a lovely set in a wooden box, a reusable practice scroll, or a blue on white porcelain ink holder. Origami enthusiasts will adore our many origami kits.
The budding artist in your life might like a cute pen, pencil, or marker, and some pretty notebooks and sketchpads.
Game night every night
Make every night game night with Chinese checkers, Chinese chess, or mahjong. Pretend you're in Squid Game (only less murder-y) with a dalgona cookie tin or gonggi tossing game. Get to know family members with Parents Are Human in various languages.
What we're reading now
No nerdy gift recs would be complete without books! A few of our recent favorite nonfiction reads include:
- Strangers in the Land by New Yorker executive editor Michael Luo, a moving narrative history of the Chinese in America
- Corky Lee's Asian America edited by Chee Wang Ng and Mae Ngai, a collection of over 200 breathtaking photos celebrating the history and cultural impact of the Asian American social justice movement, from dear friend, the late, great Corky Lee
- Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong by Katie Gee Salisbury, a gripping recounting of the life of Hollywood's first Asian American movie star
For kids we love:
- Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken by Kimberly Tso, a picture book inspired by the true story of Lillie, a real chicken trained to play tic-tac-toe in New York's Chinatown Fair arcade
- Yes We Will by Kelly Yang, a gorgeously illustrated and inspiring picture book about Asian American changemakers
- The Gordon & Li Li series by Michelle Wong McSween, a longtime favorite for kids starting to learn Mandarin Chinese
For those interested in Chinese culture are the Pocket Chinese Classics and the latest Pocket Chinese Almanac.
