Pearl River Mart in 2017: A Year in Review
Happy New Year! Have you made your resolutions? We have: bring you more of what you love. But as we move forward, we also look back — to reflect, assess, and most of all, celebrate.
Lunar New Year
We kicked the year off with Lunar New Year festivities galore, feting the Year of the Rooster with our inaugural Friendship Box, lion dancing, a magic show, and plenty of New Year fun facts.
Wiena Lin’s Future Lion
In February, NY1’s Roger Clark got interactive with Wiena Lin’s art exhibition, Future Lion, which envisioned what a futuristic Lunar New Year might look like.
A Noodlicious Friendship Box with LUCKYRICE
In honor of National Noodle Month in March, we offered our first Friendship Box curated by a guest collaborator — LUCKYRICE, a creative team of folks who create food experiences around the world. The theme of course was delicious noodles.
Louis Chan’s My Home
In April, artist-in-residence Louis Chan’s large-as-life photographs graced our gallery walls. My Home explored the different ways New York City residents turned mere apartments into homes.
NBC News: Historic Pearl River Mart Brings 'Cross-Cultural Joy' to NYC
We were happy to welcome NBC to our TriBeCa store and talk to them about the history of Pearl River, the time founder Mr. Chen treated the FBI to dim sum, and the store’s resurgence as a bringer of cross-cultural joy.
Wedding Stories
We celebrated wedding season all June with nuptial stories from our friends Mike and May and Scarlett and Dan, as well as our own fearless leader, Joanne Kwong and her husband Gene. We also imparted some wisdom on Chinese wedding traditions, past and present.
Our Basement Level Opens
A whole new world! In July we opened the basement level in our TriBeCa location, offering even more of what you already love.
InStyle Magazine: Our Mandarin Dress
We were so excited to see our mandarin floor-length dress in the pages of InStyle magazine's September issue. We’re thankful to the InStyle editors as well as all the fashion editors from over the years, from Seventeen to Vogue, who walked our aisles and spotted trends in our offerings.
Back to School, Mid-Autumn Festival, and a Big Announcement!
September was a busy month! We paid homage to back-to-school season with some dorm decor makeovers, lauded the harvest moon with our Mid-Autumn Festival Friendship Box featuring tea from the Silver Needle Tea Company, and announced our biggest news ever — the opening of our store in Chelsea Market!
Kam Mak and Artists Space
We welcomed acclaimed artist, Kam Mak, best known for his Lunar New Year series of stamps with the U.S. Post Office, as well as Artists Space, an arts organization founded in 1972 to fill a gap in the visibility and support of then-emerging contemporary art in radical form.
Ni Hao, Chelsea Market!
After a lot of hard work and two days of celebration, we opened our doors at Chelsea Market!
We were honored to welcome elected officials and representatives from some of our illustrious new neighbors, including Google, the Highline, the Whitney Museum, and Meatpacking BID.
We’re also grateful also to Time Out New York, NY1, Chelsea Now, and the New York Post for their coverage, and to the Wall Street Journal’s podcast, the Future of Everything, for inviting president Joanne Kwong to speak about the future of retail.
Thank You!
Of course we couldn’t have done any of this without you, our loyal customers, whether you’ve been with us from the start or are a new Pearl River fan.
