Sinovision: Ben Sloat's 'The Pearls That Were His Eyes'
Sinovision spoke with artist-in-residence Ben Sloat about his exploration of identity, individuality, and commodity in his exhibit, The Pearls That Were His Eyes.
Ben discusses his discovery of the golden wallpaper — the centerpiece of the exhibit — on his last trip to Beijing in a hutong-style hotel, and the image of the Father of Modern China, Deng Xiaoping, through a stamp on a package from China, as well as how the wallpaper, in a traditional, scroll-like format, depicts a traditional scene while the factory-produced Deng Xiaoping paintings are a literal interpretation of the sea change that occurred in 1990s China.
