Built in 2003, this replica was modeled after the Nine Dragon Wall in Beihai Park, Beijing, China, and is one of only a handful of Nine Dragon Wall replicas outside China. While about half the size of the wall in Beijing, the design is just as vibrant with nine large dragons and 500 smaller ones. In Chinese culture dragons represent power, wisdom, benevolence, and good fortune while the number nine symbolizes longevity.
It was brought to Chicago thanks to Raymond Lee, a Chinese immigrant and grocery magnate. Arriving from China at 15, he worked in his family's grocery store, sleeping on the third floor with his father. Over 50 years later, he donated that building to the Chinese American Museum of Chicago.
