Route 66 Sign at the Route 66 Shopping Center in Moriarity, NM

While the moniker "Route 66" is as iconic as the road itself, it wasn't always called that. It was originally designated as "Route 60," but that number was given to a route from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to Brenda Junction, Arizona.

In April 1926, about six months before its official opening, the highway was christened "66." It was thought the double number would be memorable to travelers and that it was catchier than, say, Route 62. The rest, as they say, is history.
