Miniature model of a traditional Chinese instrument. A two-stringed bowed instrument played upright and characterized by stirring, somber melodies, the erhu can be traced back to the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD). Er means "two" in Mandarin Chinese while hu refers to the nomadic people from regions to the north or west of China. These nomadic peoples are believed to have introduced the erhu to China.
