Did you know the laughing Buddha isn't a Buddha at all but a merry monk named Budai? Called Hotei in Japanese, Budai is from the 10th century and is named for the large sack he was said to carry (bu dai means "cloth sack" in Mandarin Chinese). Legend says he would travel from village to village, handing out rice and sweet to the children and the poor from his bag.
This Budai doesn't have a bag but stands with his arms raised, which stands for financial success. His big belly represents happiness and abundance.
