Treats to Bring Good Fortune. Eat your way to luck with ginger chews, lucky candy, and sour plum candy. Ginger represents good health and longevity, sweets are for a sweet year, and plum blossoms stand for perseverance and resistance.

Year of the Horse Items. People born in horse years are thought to be warm, sincere, and trustworthy. Born risk takers, they love trying new things. They're straightforward — some may even call them blunt. Above all else they value honesty and loyalty, and make steadfast friends.

Red Money Envelopes. Also called hong bao or lai see, these envelopes aren’t for mailing letters. They’re for gifting money, the crisper the bills the better. Children and singletons will especially benefit: traditionally, married couples are supposed to give hong bao to the young and unattached.

Lucky Charm. Attracting good fortune is imperative during the New Year. You can do so with a lucky charm such as lucky coins (symbolizing prosperity).

Noisemaker. Setting off firecrackers to scare away evil spirits is a Lunar New Year tradition. But anything noisy will do, whether a drum, party blower, or other clamorous item.
