In 2021, Illinois became the first state to mandate public schools teach Asian American history with the passing of the Teaching Equitable Asian American History Act (TEAACH). The act was introduced and sponsored by Representative Theresa Mah during a surge in violence against the AAPI community. It requires that public schools provide instruction about the history and contributions of Asian Americans to the economic, cultural, social, and political development of the United States.
