Opening reception of "Just Between Us: From the Archives of Arlan Huang"

History

Established in 2016, the Pearl River Mart gallery opened along with the store's reopening in Tribeca. The mezzanine space was originally considered for offices, storage, and even demolition. However, newly appointed president and second-generation owner, Joanne Kwong, had other ideas.

Pearl River Mart has always drawn inspiration from its surroundings — the activism of Chinatown, the unsurpassed energy of Tribeca, the originality of Soho. The gallery is a tribute to all those who, through their creativity, build bridges, understanding, and joy.

Since its opening (and a move to a new Soho space in 2021), we've hosted over 40 exhibitions and even more artists. Each one shares our mission and vision of always looking toward the light. But each also brings their own history, perspective, and identity.

The Pearl River Mart gallery is like a wok, Joanne likes to say. Each artist seasons it with their own flavor, adding to the layers of a space that strives to tell the many and varied stories of what it means to be Asian in America.
