Just Between Us: From the Archives of Arlan Huang in the Meatpacking District (May 1–31, 2023)
Accompanying the "Just Between Us" exhibition in our Soho gallery was this installation in the outdoor dining area of the Meatpacking district. Featured on in the table decals were important figures from early AAPI activist days in NYC, including:
- Fay Chiang (1952–2017), activist, painter, poet, and longtime executive director of Basement Workshop, one of the first New York-based Asian American arts organizations
- The Asian Coalition Against the Vietnam War, an activist group which mobilized large contingents of Asians who marched in Washington DC and New York;
- Squid Frames, the framing business Arlan Huang started with business partner Karl Matsuda, which became a place where artists and writers would gather and Arlan would make lifelong friends and the friendly "art swaps" that would constitute the bedrock of his now-vast collection
- Corky Lee, (1947–2021), a key figure in contemporary Asian American history, the “undisputed unofficial Asian American Photographer Laureate,” activist, and dear friend.
