Opened in 1971 by a group of young Chinese men and women, Pearl River Mart in Manhattan was the first Chinese American department store (ever). It started during a politically rocky time between the United States and China, and its founders hoped to decrease the mystery of their home country by introducing their food and culture to Americans. Over the years, it has become known for its vast selection of knick knacks and snacks, from chopsticks to candies, and other locations have opened, including in the Chelsea Market and the Museum of Chinese in America, both in New York.
